For some communities, there are several options when it comes to selecting a restoration company. It seems as simple as going to Google and picking the first one that comes up on the search. However, just because it is first, does not always mean that it is the best company for you. Understanding that it can be challenging to decide who to go with when a disaster hits, so preparing for the unexpected is often best.

Here are some tips when it comes to choosing the right restoration company for you, whether you have time to plan, or during a disaster.

Call your insurance company to see if they have a preferred companyAsk your friends if they have had to call someone out beforeLook at reviewsLook to see what certifications and affiliations are listed on the company website

For commercial buildings:

Possible leak from AC & Roof

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

Mold damage on a ceiling Wow, that's a lot of Mold! Lets get rid of it!

A leak in your commercial building can leave a lot of damage and can be a loss of profit when you have to close for days sometimes weeks to repair the damage.

We had a client that called and gave a few details on the damage. Possible leak from the AC and or the roof. When the wall tiles were removed, mold was discovered in multiple offices and the main hallway.

First thing, we always ask for the year of the building or home. This will determine is we have to test for asbestos. Anything before 1980 will need to be present before work can be performed.

Our team arrived on scene when asbestos was determined negative.

It was determined that all ceiling tiles and the framing for the drop ceiling need to be detached and the affected insulation and dry wall will need to be removed and treated with antimicrobial. Containments will need to be built around the affected areas and treatment will be remediated.

Commercial Losses are Personal

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Sign saying temporarily closed Closed for now...not forever

When an emergency strikes your home, it can feel like it immobilizes you. Knowing that your homeowner's or renter’s insurance should cover damages and help to replace your contents, can still feel like a violation. Some may argue that for a commercial business to suffer a restoration emergency, it might not feel as personal; but let me tell you, we see it all the time. Working with small businesses, this is their lively hood, so when there is a restoration emergency that shuts down the business it can feel the same as if the loss was to happen in their home.

Earlier this year, we were contracted by a local cookie shop to help pack out the store. Someone ran their vehicle into the front of the building causing major structural damage. After suffering the economic hit, that COVID brought to most businesses, this local shop was now looking at closing their business for several months while the repairs were performed. Yes, insurance is helping cover the cost of the damage to the building, but the uneasy and possible uncertainties that sneak into your mind knowing that your lively hood is placed on hold can feel paralyzing. You depend on the contractors involved to care for your items as if they were their own. That the contractor will do their best to prevent delays and to provide the highest level of service.

At SERVPRO® are motto is “Like it never even happened.” This is our goal for each and every one of our customers. Although we are only helping with the pack out and pack back, in this case, we are standing with this local business owner in hopes that she feels as our motto says when everything is said and done.

News Spreads Fast

Coronavirus spreads through Belen family

Fast response is key when it comes to the restoration industry, which means quick call backs and arriving on-site in a timely manner from that initial call. In our last blog, we mentioned how we went to Belen to help Zach, our new 4-legged friend. Well, we received that call due to our fast response and timeliness on another job site. You might have seen it in the news recently, about a prominent family in Belen who were exposed to COVID and several tested positive. We started with the call to clean the Roland Sanchez, M.D. facility over a weekend. The next day, the client called us back and expressed their appreciation for how quickly we responded to her call and how quickly and efficiently our crews completed the work. She was so happy that she sent the rest of the family a text message telling them to use SERVPRO®. So, over the next few days, we received calls from every family member in that area who owned a business to come clean their facility. These businesses rely on fast and reliable service to get back to business. We were happy to work with the Sanchez family and look forward to future business with them.

Proactive Disinfectant Foggings

8/18/2020 (Permalink)

Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless

We have been called on quite a bit to help businesses disinfect and sanitize their facilities either in a proactive approach against COVID-19 or for those who have been hit with confirmed cases. Since March, our phones have been ringing with calls from all types of commercial businesses needing help. One popular approach we are often asked about is if we can provide fogging services, which we do. However, depending on the level of cleaning you need there are different recommendations that the CDC has provided. For some businesses that are looking for a proactive approach, a disinfectant fogging is suitable, for others we have to provide a deeper cleaning for confirmed cases (this is what we call a category 3 cleaning) following CDC guidelines and then finish with a fogging. Places like Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless have hired us to come in for a bi-weekly fogging to provide an extra level of protection for their staff and those they serve. If you are interested in finding out how we can schedule weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly foggings for your company please call 505-345-4700

Kitchen Exhaust Hood Cleaning

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

Dirty Kitchen Exhaust Hood

All professional kitchens have regularly scheduled checkups for the equipment, which also includes the kitchen exhaust hoods. The kitchen exhaust hoods, or what some may call vent hoods, should be cleaned at a minimum on a quarterly basis; however, this honestly depends on how much food is prepared in the kitchen and the type of food that is prepared. For some restaurants, monthly cleaning is needed. Foods that are higher in fat and grease, dirty up those hoods quickly. So why should you be concerned with your kitchen exhaust hoods and their cleanliness? Well, the most important is for fire prevention. If you fail to have your hoods cleaned regularly one large flame could shout up while cooking and ignite on the grease. Depending on how dirty they are, the grease build-up could then act as further fuel to help spread the fire through the rest of the exhaust, putting the employees and customers at risk. Other reasons are for improved indoor air quality, commercial compliance, and to prevent further breeding grounds for other bacteria and mold.

If you are uncertain about how frequently you should clean your vent hoods you can reach out to the local health department or just give us a call at 505-345-4700 and we can tell you the health of your hoods.

Life is really kicking us right now. 2020 was supposed to be the year of vision and not a year of setbacks. While some companies are allowed to stay open and work because the government labels them as essential, other companies are suffering, closing their doors after years of service. As a community, now is the time to step up and support each other because we are in this together, so we have to lean on each other to come out of this together. Our business has been fortunate enough to have stayed open during these last several months, as the government has labeled us as an essential business as we can provide sanitization and emergency services. So, we want to know how we can help support your business? If there is something, we can do to help your company survive, please let us know. Drop our Marketing Representative, Brandy Smotts, an email at brandy@SERVPRO9660.com or call her directly at 505-918-5045. We want everyone to come out of these lockdowns. Also, if you need sanitation from a confirmed case or want to take proactive steps, please reach out to us so we can find a way to work within your budget. We are here to help you, whether that is cleaning your facility or stopping by to grab a meal from your restaurant.

Emergency Ready Profile, do you have yours?

6/11/2020 (Permalink)

Are you ready?

The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it now. Did you know that more than 50% of businesses never open after a major disaster? Although, New Mexico does not often have major natural disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes. However, we do experience fires and floods; and not to mention all the unnatural disasters that could happen.

So how can businesses plan for a disaster? The easiest way is to have an Emergency Ready Profile®. With SERVPRO® of South Albuquerque, these plans are completely free. It is our way to help our commercial customers have proper plans in place.

The process of creating an ERP

  • Contact our SERVPRO® of South Albuquerque Team
  • Schedule a time for a representative to come walk the property
  • A representative will ask some questions and take pictures of the property
  • A representative will then compile everything in a folder for your office
  • And most importantly it’s free

A service that is beneficial for your company at no charge. Seems pretty simple right? Just ask yourself, are you ready for whatever happens when disaster strikes? If not give us a call so we can give you peace of mind, 505-345-4700.

Dirty HVAC Coils

Companies have many reasons to have their air ducts and HVAC systems cleaned on a regular basis. Just some of the benefits business owners would have from scheduling the cleaning is:

  • Creates a cleaner living environment
  • Reduces allergens
  • Can help people breathe easier
  • Removes unpleasant smells
  • Improves airflow efficiency, which can lower energy bills

We've never met a small business owner who does not want to lower their energy bills. Have you? Some businesses even require specific air quality levels, so the only way to keep this within their regulations is to schedule cleaning on a regular basis.

When is the last time you had your air ducts or HVAC system checked? Give us a call and we'll let you know where you stand.

Fire Strikes a Commercial Building in Albuquerque

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

A commercial building experienced a fire that left their building full of smoke and soot damage. SERVPRO® of South Albuquerque was called out immediately to assess the damage. When you experience a fire in your home or business, the smoke and water damage from the firefighters' extinguishing efforts will likely cause additional damage. If you experience a fire loss in your home or business, here are some tips to better understand the fire restoration process.

  1. Emergency Contact

When you call us, you will be asked questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate team, equipment, and resources.

  1. Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

SERVPRO® carefully inspects the entire home or business- not just the immediate area. Sometimes, soot and water affect areas that are not always seen. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

  1. Immediate Board-up and Roof Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs, as seen in the photo of the commercial property. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

  1. Water Removal and Drying (if water is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. Most of the water occurs if pipes melt and leak, or from the firefighters' efforts to extinguish the fire. We use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the water and complete the drying process

  1. Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

  1. Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire.  We’re also trained to remove several types of odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

  1. Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. SERVPRO® of South Albuquerque has a reconstruction division that focuses solely on getting your home or business back to normal, "Like it never even happened."®

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”®

Freshen Up Your Albuquerque Restaurant This Spring

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

Give your customers a fresh greeting this spring with our cleaning services!

A new season has just arrived here in Albuquerque, and it offers an opportunity to refresh your restaurant. Winter months normally mean windows stay shut, and dirt and grime from boots and heavy shoes gets tracked onto the floor. Similar to how people look forward to spring cleaning at home, you can do the same for your restaurant. SERVPRO of South Albuquerque offers plenty of services that can help your business start the season fresh!

Clean Your Air Ducts and HVAC

Your air ducts and HVAC unit work hard throughout the winter to keep your customers and employees warm. The ventilation system should be properly cleaned in the spring to make sure the air quality in your restaurant is not poor. If it has not been serviced for some time, your air could be circulating dust, pollen, odors and dirt and debris. Our technicians and equipment can clean out your system and make sure everyone breathes easier in the new season.

Kitchen Cleaning

SERVPRO of South Albuquerque is hood cleaning certified and offer cleaning services ranging from cleaning restaurant hoods to removing biohazard contaminants. Checking the hoods in the kitchen is usually a twice a year job, so what better time to start than for spring cleaning. Cleaning the pilot lights (if it is gas) is also a good idea. Just make sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions. Empty and sanitize the ice machine, and wipe down walls, ceilings and dry storage areas. SERVPRO of South Albuquerque offers great commercial cleaning options as well, so give us a call if there are items you want professionals to fix.

Rugs and Carpets

If your restaurant uses rugs or carpet, springtime is a great time to freshen them as well. If the furniture in your restaurant does not often move, tracks from normal foot traffic can start to wear down your rugs or carpets. When they become matted, these items also hold in an abundance of dust and debris that is carried in on shoes. A proper cleaning will get rid of the smells and the dust! The SERVPRO System offers a number of cleaning options to match any type of upholstery or carpet.

SERVPRO of South Albuquerqueis only a phone call away if you need a professional to help freshen up your restaurant for spring. Get in contact today!

Commercial Water Restoration in Albuquerque Presents Unique Challenges

Commercial Flood Cleanup

In Albuquerque many buildings suffer a water damage claim every year. They range from small areas affected to large floods that cause damage to every room.

Office and Administration Areas and Water Damage

When office areas are affected by water and need extraction many challenges arise. You have to deal with electrical outlets getting wet, computers, monitors and printers and personal belongings of staff. Along with those items you have desks, chairs and filing cabinets that all need to be moved or put on blocks, so they are not damaged.

Warehouse and Storage Areas and Water Damage

When the water affects the shipping and receiving area of a building there are many challenges as well. Many times, pallets of product are throughout the warehouse. These pallets do help to keep inventory from getting wet if the water did not come from above. Water extraction in this area needs to be done quickly so the company operations may get back on track.

SERVPRO® of South Albuquerque has the training, experience, and equipment to handle large commercial flooding or water damage emergencies. Whether your water emergency occurs in a small office building or big box store, we will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to its completion

3 Strategies for Keeping Your Commercial Building’s Plumbing Healthy

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Preventing plumbing problems is usually less costly than having them repaired

When your Albuquerque commercial building suffers from sudden plumbing problems, the results can be costly. Flooded rooms, damaged merchandise and ruined equipment may cost thousands of dollars in loss and a great deal of stress for you as a business owner. However, there are a few actions you can take to protect your building, no matter its size or location, from plumbing mishaps before they occur.

1. Find a Plumber Before You Need One

Trying to find the right plumber in the middle of a plumbing disaster can be a stressful experience. Because a broken pipe or leaking toilet will need repair right away, you may not have time to compare service options and prices and end up overpaying. However, finding a plumbing service before you need one not only gives you someone to call during a water emergency, but you can also take the time to find one that suits your budget and plumbing needs at your leisure.

2. Maintain Your Plumbing System

Preventing plumbing problems is usually less costly than having them repaired, so keeping your building’s pipes and drains healthy can be a wise investment. Have leaks repaired, have faucets and pipes checked often, and make an appointment with a flood damage and restoration company to have your building checked for potential plumbing issues that may result in flooding. Regular maintenance can prevent water damage to your building that may eventually cause serious structural issues.

3. Check Exterior Lines and Pipes

Your commercial building’s exterior water lines and pipes can be vulnerable to bad weather, cold temperatures and aging. Having them checked several times a year may prevent a water main break and severe flooding that may take weeks to repair. Ensure that pipes along exterior walls are properly insulated to reduce the risk of them bursting during the winter months.

Plumbing problems at your Rio Rancho/Sandoval County, commercial building can be costly when it comes to repair expenses and the flooding damage a mishap might cause. Maintaining pipes and lines and being prepared for an emergency can protect you and your business from these issues and give you peace of mind as a business owner.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

How To Discourage Birds From Nesting on Your Albuquerque Building

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Birds commonly migrate as seasons change, and when they do, they need a place to rest. Many birds look for welcoming surfaces on which to build nests, but the drawback is that these nests are not always wanted by the building’s human inhabitants and droppings are unsightly. A mud nest is not only an eyesore; it can actually degrade the structure of the building, initiating the need for restoration services. Bird removal is not always easy, and many methods are illegal. The best bird cleaning strategies, therefore, are preventative.

1. Mock Predators

While it may be illegal to physically remove the birds from your building in Albuquerque as you can with other methods of pest control, it is perfectly okay to scare them off. Visual deterrents that resemble natural predators can be an effective way to discourage birds from taking up residence on your commercial property. The migratory birds spot the deterrent and tend to flee. For an even more effective strategy, try moving the deterrent to different locations so the birds don’t get used to it.

2. Physical Barriers

A net that covers the awnings where birds like to nest can prove to be a lot of trouble for them. If birds have to work too hard to get to their preferred spot, they are likely to give up and go find a place that’s easier to reach. Nets are typically inexpensive, easy to install and discreet. They are a useful bird cleaning tool.

3. Covered Landing Zone

If the net is not enough, you may have to make the area where the birds land and begin to assemble their homes inhospitable. A sloping apparatus can make it impossible for the birds to get sure footing. They simply slide off the landing, and your building remains nest-free.

You cannot control the migratory patterns of birds, and once they have nested on your building, you may not have a lot of choice as to whether they can stay. You can defend your property with preventative measures, though.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

Commercial Water Damage In Albuquerque

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

Everyone knows that the sprinkler system is there to stop fire damage, but no one understands the damage that happens when it engages.

Commercial Water Damage

Albuquerque business owners had to deal with flooding earlier this year. The rain was needed, but it surprised many of them. Fortunately, weather-related floods are rare in this part of New Mexico. What is not so rare for area businesses is when the water comes in from damaged plumbing.

Commercial water damage surprises Albuquerque business owners every time it happens. Everyone knows that the sprinkler system is there to stop fire damage, but no one understands the damage that happens when it engages. Fortunately, SERVPRO has the experience, training, and equipment to restore an office or a kitchen back to their original state.

Sprinklers soak everything, that is what they are supposed to do to prevent the spread of fire. Paper products, like documents, cardboard storage boxes, and books quickly turn to a pulpy mush and must be thrown out. If the final condition is not an issue and the business owner needs to keep original contracts, we can preserve the legibility of our technicians can get them spread out on a dry surface. We use air movers to blow warm, dry air over the paper gently and while we cannot return the items to their original condition or look, we can preserve the image in many cases.

The item that usually catches the most damage next is the carpet. SERVPRO technicians use extraction wands to draw out water without damaging the nape of the carpet. If there is a carpet pad, we remove and dispose of it. Pads quickly deteriorate when they become wet, and they are cheaper to replace rather than attempt to restore. Once we remove the water, crew members use the air movers again to force warm, dry air across the surface to dry it out while preventing further damage.

In a commercial kitchen, sprinklers do not usually cause much damage to the equipment. Here, our technicians concentrate on removing water from inside equipment like fryers to safely use them again. They also dry out behind and under everything to prevent mold growth and to make the room safe to walk in again.

To accomplish this, we set up fans at exits to blow the damp air out of the kitchen as we use long-handled squeegees to push water across the floor and out of the building. Once we have the majority of the water out, we set up air movers to finish drying the floors so we can return the kitchen to the owner as soon and safely as possible.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

The Advantages of Duct Cleaning For Your Restaurant

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Provides Commercial Duct Cleaning

SERVPRO Provides Exceptional Commercial Cleaning and Sanitizing of Ductwork in Both Large and Small Enterprises

Running an efficient restaurant is something that most business owners in the culinary field strive to do. You do your best to keep the costs and outgoing expenses down so in turn your overall profit margin is more considerable. One of the ways that you can do this, as well as improve the quality of the experience that customers have in your establishment, is to ensure that all facets of your facility are running at optimal levels.

One of the overlooked aspects in this regard is the ductwork attached to your heating and air conditioning system. Over time, these pathways become partially blocked and clogged with debris, dust, dirt and even germs or bacteria. Duct cleaning Albuquerque is a service that our SERVPRO professionals can walk you through and perform for your business, which can lead to reducing your outgoing costs and providing a better eating experience for your loyal patrons.

Every time that your air kicks on throughout the building, moving through these ducts with built-up debris and dust, you are circulating these particles around through the dining areas and kitchen of your restaurant. While much of this cannot be seen by even the most perceptive of observers, most business owners do not consider this possibility to be acceptable in their food preparation or serving areas. Indoor air quality-IAQ-is a significant attribute that adds to the ambiance of a restaurant.

Moreover, cleaning the ducts of your business can allow the air conditioner and heating units not to have to work harder to get air through the system. For many business owners, this lesser user of electricity can reduce their utility costs every month.

It is essential to note that while our SERVPRO professionals can work around your schedule, often your restaurant does not need to close or reduce operating hours to complete this service. With fitted vacuums and specialty heavier equipment that seal tightly over vents, dust, mold spores, pollen, and debris pulled from the ducts do not get spread throughout the building. The additional benefits of protecting against mold growth and circulating pleasant scents conducive to the overall eating experience cannot be lightly discounted.

If you can see the benefits of choosing duct cleaning for your restaurant, our team of professionals is ready to help you breathe a little easier.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

What To Do When a Toilet Overflows

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

You can reduce water damage by acting immediately and efficiently

Most buildings have bathrooms available for both workers and customers. However, there is a chance that the toilets in these bathrooms can overflow and cause a lot of water damage. Toilet overflow can happen when the fixture is clogged or mechanically damaged, but it can be quickly stopped before things get drastic. Here are a few tips that can help you know how to stop a toilet from overflowing and what to do about the water that has already spilled.

How To Stop the Overflow

If the tank won’t stop releasing water into the bowl, locate the toilet’s water valve and shut the water off. The valve is usually directly behind the fixture. After that, try doing the following things:

• Clean up as much water as you can with towels or a wet vacuum.

• Remove any items that were exposed to the water.

• Open the windows to help dry out the area.

You can reduce water damage by acting immediately and efficiently.

Inspect the Damage

After cleaning up as much as you can, try to figure out what happened. It might have been a clog, or maybe a pipe is damaged. If you are inexperienced with plumbing, call the professionals in Albuquerque to help you out. If the toilet flood was especially bad, call a water damage company to help you prevent mold and further damage.

Be Careful Around Sewage

If the toilet overflow involves sewage, use protective clothing such as gloves or watertight boots to clean up the water. Sewage is potentially harmful and should not come into direct contact with your skin. Be sure to properly disinfect the entire area once the water is removed.

With these tips in mind, you can handle this situation with control. Prevent future toilet overflow problems by cleaning your building’s bathrooms often and by doing frequent plumbing inspections. It doesn’t hurt to have a plunger nearby, too.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of South Albuquerque offer cleaning services ranging from cleaning restaurant hoods to removing biohazard contaminants.

Safe Flood Clean Up for Albuquerque Businesses

2/27/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO can help with any size water damage claim.

When a building is impacted by a flood, proper cleanup is critical. When it is a commercial building, clean up can be both a bigger task and a bigger safety concern. Water that is considered to be contaminated can pose dangers to employees, customers or residents of the building. That’s why it is important for every commercial property owner in Albuquerque to know more about water extraction and content cleaning.

What Is Contaminated Water?

Commonly referred to as “black water,” toxic flood water requires more than just extraction. It contaminates everything it touches, including the air, with things such as hepatitis and E. coli bacteria. Because mold and bacteria begin growing in as little as 24 hours, the situation can worsen very quickly, so it’s important to act immediately.

What Standards Do Water Cleanup Specialists Follow?

Because of the hazards of cleaning up flooded areas, water restoration experts follow specific standards to ensure full decontamination:

Removing porous materials, such as wood, drywall or carpeting
Eliminating microbes on non-porous surfaces, such as concrete or glass, and salvaging the materials
Cleaning and treating air
Preventing mold grow
Monitoring for contaminants

Why Use a Water Damage Repair Expert?

The chemicals, tools and equipment necessary for proper decontamination are tools of the trade for restoration technicians. When combined with their training and expertise, it makes them a valuable resource for anyone facing water damage. Technicians are also typically available around the clock because they know emergencies caused by floods aren’t limited to normal working hours.

Commercial property owners in Albuquerque want to keep their buildings safe, and if they know more about content cleaning and black water decontamination, they can better prepare to react when flooding occurs. Arming oneself with knowledge and relying on experts to help clean up flood waters is a smart move that can save money in the long run.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

Commercial Water Damage in Albuquerque Due to Sewage Leaks

6/19/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South Albuquerque is ready to respond immediately and work quickly to clean or restore your business.

Water Damage Remediation Can Prevent Employee Health Issues

One of the more dangerous types of water damage which can occur in your commercial property is the leakage of sewage. Sewage contains bacteria, fungi, and viruses, many which can cause a lot of health concerns, including mold. Many people sadly do not realize the hazards that sewage can bring into your building, especially for those who are very old or young, and for anyone who already has an immune system which has been compromised or who have respiratory problems.

As a business owner, there are some fundamental principles you should know about sewer backups and water damage:

Sewage hosts several different pathogenic and disease-causing bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Anyone who is working on losses of sewage must have vaccinations which are up to date, including their Hepatitis B.

Exposure to sewage is dangerous, especially for anyone under the age of two or over the age of sixty, for people with weakened immune systems, anyone who is recovering from surgery, for women who are pregnant, anyone who has AIDS, or anyone on chemotherapy or prescription drugs.

It is unsafe to stay in an Albuquerque building which has been flooded by sewage unless the area that is contaminated can be totally sealed off and put under a controlled air flow, so there is not a danger of cross contamination to sectors that are not affected.

Materials that are highly absorbent and saturated with sewage material such as carpeting, carpet padding, upholstery, insulation, and drywall that cannot be laundered for at least ten minutes in hot water will need to be trashed.  It is too big of a health risk to only clean and dry these materials.

Only professionals who are highly trained should be performing your sewage and water damage remediation work. Afterward, a third party environmental professional can do post-remediation verification to make sure your building is safe to re-occupy.

Importance of Exhaust Hood Cleaning in Albuquerque and Santa Fe Commercial Kitchens

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

To ensure the safety of staff and patrons against dangerous building fires, make sure to have all hoods properly cleaned on a regular basis.

Exhaust hood systems play an important role in the restaurant kitchen, pulling heat, smoke, and odor away from cooking surfaces. This is for the protection of both employees and the restaurant facility itself, but over time, the greasy buildup inside hoods and ductwork can become a safety hazard of its own.

Protecting against this hazard requires regular and thorough cleaning of the exhaust hood, exhaust hood filters, and ductwork. Grease buildup inside the hood duct system is among the leading causes of restaurant fires, and proper maintenance and cleaning can drastically reduce this risk.

The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) requires professional exhaust hood cleaning for all commercial kitchens. Failure to meet these requirements not only increases the risk of fire, but also can put a restaurant at risk for hefty fines and mandatory closure.

Exhaust hood cleaning requirements and best practices are outlined in NFPA 96, including the frequency of cleaning for various types of kitchens:

Monthly – Systems serving solid fuel cooking operations

Quarterly – Systems serving high-volume operations, such as 24-hour cooking, charbroiling, wok cooking, etc.

Semi-Annually – Systems serving moderate volume cooking operations

Annually – Systems serving low volume cooking operations, such as day camps, churches, seasonal businesses, etc.

While restaurant employees are expected to clean the exterior surfaces of exhaust hoods as part of their normal hood cleaning procedures, the thorough cleaning outlined in NFPA 96 is to be carried out by trained, certified kitchen exhaust cleaning professionals. SERVPRO of South Albuquerque is Exhaust Hood Cleaning Certified and a member of The National Fire Protection Agency.

Our scope of work will include:

  • Disassembly, cleaning, and degreasing hoods, including hood filter tracts, grease troughs, and removable grease cups

  • Removal of roof and/or wall mounted fans from ductwork to degrease the base, shroud, and blades

  • Inspecting exhaust fans for loose or worn out fan belts

  • Cleaning and degreasing all hood filters, hood parts and accessories, and replacing if necessary

  • Cleaning all accessible parts of ductwork from exhaust fans to each individual hood

  • Applying food-safe polish to stainless steel ductwork

  • Thoroughly cleaning all affected areas (remove plastic, mop, remove any debris, etc.)

  • Providing a complete, detailed written report of all work performed, and deficiencies in the exhaust system, and recommendations for addressing any problems

  • Attaching a certificate showing company name, person performing the work, and date of cleaning to each hood cleaned

Duct access doors will allow professional hood cleaners to perform a thorough “top to bottom” cleaning of the exhaust systems. SERVPRO of South Albuquerque Professional hood cleaning services have a strong understanding of NFPA 96 requirements, and will be able to help restaurant owners and managers make sure their equipment is up to date, functioning properly, and meeting standards for compliance.

SERVPRO of South Albuquerque Certified professional hood cleaning service is a necessity for any commercial cooking operation, both to reduce the risk of fire and avoid noncompliance. Our reputable hood cleaning services will be happy to walk you through the procedures, provide “before and after” photos, and work with restaurant management to ensure safety and compliance.

To ensure the safety of staff and patrons against dangerous building fires, make sure to have all hoods properly cleaned on a regular basis.

Building Containment to Protect Unaffected Areas

4/19/2017 (Permalink)

The owner was happy to continue with business during restoration!

Sometimes our crews need to move through unaffected areas of a home or business to get debris from the affected area to a disposal site. When that happens, our crews build containment chambers to prevent sewage from spreading to the unaffected areas. Containment chambers are also built to reduce the amount of air being dried, which can speed up drying times.

When we arrived at this Albuquerque commercial water loss and performed our initial inspection we found sewage in the crawlspace. There was approximately 60 square feet and it was three inches deep. We began by covering all the registers inside and out and set up an Ozone machine and Negative Air Scrubbers. The materials in the crawlspace had to be removed but the access point for the crawlspace was in the back of the business and the shortest path to the dumpster led through the unaffected business. The crews used plastic sheeting to construct containment so that the unaffected areas would not be contaminated.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier, and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

    Commercial Carpet Cleaning

    7/5/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South Albuquerque (505) 345-4700...Here to help!

The following was copied directly from: http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/commercial-carpet-cleaning/

“Commercial carpet receives many times the traffic of typical residential carpet. That's why it's important to select (fiber, construction, pile design, color) and install commercial carpet that fits a building user's needs. However, once that carpet is properly selected and installed, its durability and lasting beauty is highly dependent on the ongoing maintenance and cleaning programs.

The first critical component in programmed maintenance and cleaning is routine vacuuming coupled with rapid response to spots and spills. Carpet serves as a "sink" or collection point for everything that is tracked in or settles out of the air. Qualities such as sound absorption, slip resistance and soil-trapping ability makes it the most desirable floor covering in many buildings. Ultimately, however, even the best maintained carpet must be thoroughly cleaned to empty the "sink."

This is where IICRC-certifed technicians come in. They have the equipment, training and experience not only to empty the "sink," but also to restore the color and beauty of commercial carpet, while improving overall indoor environmental quality in the building.”

    Commercial Carpet Tips from IICRC

    7/5/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from: http://www.iicrc.org/consumers/care/commercial-carpet-cleaning/

“What steps should I take to maintain carpet in a high-traffic area on a daily basis, and to deal with spills and stains?

    ·         It's a good idea to keep sand, grit and grass clippings off walkways outside entries to prevent inward tracking of these abrasive soils.

    ·         Purchase a properly sized entry mat, the bigger the better.  There must be room for at least two steps to sufficiently wipe soil from feet before encountering the installed carpet. A carpet with a nylon face and vinyl back is best for moisture and oils absorption, combined with the resiliency necessary to collect a quantity of particle soil. The IICRC suggests a rental mat, since that guarantees frequent maintenance. Place entry mats on hard surfaces rather than on carpet where they can trap moisture or cause plasticizer migration.

    ·         Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum daily, especially after major events. The sooner you collect soils from the surface, the easier it is to remove them. For most carpet, you should use an upright vacuum with brush agitation, unless your canister vacuum is particularly well designed. The wider the head, the more efficient.

    ·         Typically, deep cleaning should be accomplished on at least a semi-annual basis, with no more than two entry and high-traffic area "rinse" cleanings between the deep cleaning. This is dependent on traffic and daily maintenance as well. At a minimum, some attention should be given to primary entry areas on a quarterly basis.

    ·         If spots are treated immediately, most will respond with plain warm water and very little mild detergent added.

    ·         Use high-efficiency double-lined poly-fiber collection bags. This reduces periodic maintenance such as dusting of furniture, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filter exchange.

    ·         Make sure the HVAC system is slightly positively pressurized as well, which means that air is going out when doors are opened, rather than being sucked in. Proper air exchange rates can be calibrated according to ASHRAE regulations for the building with a trained HVAC contractor.

    ·         Ensure proper air filtration through the HVAC System. High-efficiency pleated filters, rather than inexpensive fiberglass filters, are recommended.”

Your Experts in Commercial Water Damage in South Albuquerque

Handle Your South Albuquerque Commercial Water Damage with SERVPRO

If you have recently become a victim of commercial water damage in South Albuquerque , you may be wondering what you can do to mitigate your damages. There is a critical period in which certain actions must be taken to preserve as much of your property as possible and to decrease any health risks when water damage has occurred in a commercial space.

Preparing a Space for Water Damage Restoration
Before you enter your commercial space or any flooded building, you will need to make sure the electrical power to the structure is shut off. You should also be aware that during a flooding event, small animals or reptiles tend to seek shelter inside of buildings. Be prepared to deal with the discovery of wild animals in your space.

Protect yourself from entering any flooded building by wearing an organic vapor respirator. You can purchase these at any local paint and building supply stores. You also want to have rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. The first thing you should do is ventilate the affected areas by opening the windows and placing fans where possible.

Unfortunately, there likely will be items that you need to throw away. Any items that are porous and have absorbed contaminated floodwater cannot be restored. If your commercial space has drywall, mattresses, pillows, box springs, particle board, carpets or carpet pads, these will need to be discarded if they have become saturated. However, there is good news: If you have clothing or household fabrics that can be machine-washed, you may be able to salvage them. Use your washing machine to clean these items with a 10-minute soak at the minimum in hot water with detergent. The soap and normal wash should remove most of the contamination and any staining that is present.

Be aware that your commercial space will need a thorough professional inspection, cleaning and possibly restructuring. Water damaged walls and installations must be removed and repaired, and pockets of saturation should be exposed for drying and sanitizing. Always remember that mold growth could take a few days to appear as it thrives in a moist environment with organic-type materials such as paper or particle board and in temperatures that range between 60 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep good airflow throughout the interior environment, and maintain moderate temperatures to decrease the risk of any mold growth. It is also important that you let your space dry out before any rebuilding occurs.
