This year has proven to be a roller coaster of crazy so if you do not have a disaster preparedness kit ready for you home, you can follow these steps to make sure you are ready when disaster strikes.

Lightning Strike Leads to Residential Fire - OH NO! It does happen and we want you to be prepared and be safe. 

Know when a fire extinguisher is needed from the tips below:

Generally, if you’ve used one fire extinguisher, you’ll use them all, as they typically follow the same usage procedure known as PASS:

• Pull the pin to break the tamper seal
• Aim the nozzle at the bottom of the fire
• Squeeze the handle and release extinguisher chemicals
• Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire until it’s extinguished

By now, fire extinguishers have become staples in most disaster-ready homes and businesses and provide billions worldwide with a quick, straightforward way to respond to sudden blazes.

Knowing the steps below, can save you a ton of hassle with instances like the average kitchen fire but to really mitigate as much fire damage as possible, there are a few other things you need to take into account.

1. Choosing Your Extinguisher

The first thing you should always be aware of is that not every fire extinguisher is good for every job. For example, when dealing with a grease fire, you’ll need a class B extinguisher to really get the job done safely. 2. Emergency Services

3. Be Smart

Lastly, know when to leave the house. If the blaze becomes too large or your extinguisher runs out of juice, it’s time to get outdoors. Ponds are gorgeous just not on your roof!

Flat roofs notoriously love to leak due to inadequate drainage, and this only becomes more apparent as your roof gets older. Heat, wind, or storms may have caused irreversible damage to the original seams and screws, widening the path to further deterioration and leakage.

Flat roofs may develop a problem called ponding that doesn’t occur on sloped roofs. Ponding is when water collects in puddles on the roof instead of draining off in a timely manner. Homeowners may think this small amount of water is harmless, but ponding tends to get worse over time and can have a negative impact on the roof and your whole home.

Even a little pond can leave a lot of damage. As you can see in the photo attached - The top photos displays the small ponding area and the bottom shows the drywall damage that was impacted by the leak.

Summer Lightning Storms

Lightning Storm

Here in New Mexico, we have to keep a close eye on the weather, as we are all too familiar with how quickly things can change. So now that monsoon season has really started (the actual start date is June 15, but nothing really happened then), we need to be aware of what is happening outside. We celebrate the rain when it comes, and it is a sign of relief for our drought-stricken state. For several of us, we like to sit outside and watch the rain as it comes down. Just give me a cup of coffee and let me sit in peace, so needless to say, but I will anyway, all the rain we got over the weekend set the stage for peaceful moments.

Something else I love about summer is watching the lightning storms over the city—some of my favorite local photographers capture pictures of lightning that leave me speechless. However, as beautiful the lightning is, there is also a danger. Lightning can travel from miles away to find its target. This year some of the concerns are an increase in lightning strikes while people are out hiking. This is more of a concern this year as more people are taking advantage of all the wonders that New Mexico offers since there are still so many restrictions everywhere else. Lightning can also start fires and cause other damage to structures.

Here are a few tips to follow during a lightning storm.

If you’re caught outside during a storm:

• Try to find shelter
• Get as low as possible, but do not lie down
• Stay off your cell phone
• Get out of your tent
• Toss away any metal objects
• If you’re with a group, separate from each other

If you’re inside during a storm:

• Stay inside
• Stay off corded phones (I know these aren’t really around, but there are still some)
• Stay off other corded electronics or electrical equipment
• Stay away from windows and doors
• Do not lie on concrete floors or against concrete walls

New Mexico's Risk Factor

When most states talk about natural disasters they are referring to earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Well, we definitely do not have hurricanes, as for the other to we are pretty lucky in New Mexico with our minimum risk factor. On average New Mexico has about 10 tornadoes a year. As for earthquakes, the largest earthquake hit Socorro in 1906. Although we still experience minor quakes in parts of the state, none of which cause too much damage. So if we do not have major disasters, what do we have.

In New Mexico our “natural disasters” include:

• Hail Storms
• Wildfires
• Monsoons
• Lightning Storms
• Wind Storms
• Ice Storms
• Snow Storms

Each one of these happens sporadically throughout the state, and each year the experience and threat level is different. While in the last two years, with the monsoon seasons we saw significant rainfall, but this year has started off pretty minimal. Our marketing rep, Brandy, was recently talking about the snowstorm that hit at the end of 2006 and carried through the start of 2007. It was the most she was forced home from work, that was before this pandemic, of course, those were for different reasons.

In the restoration industry, we look at all of these situations just a little differently than most. For us, those things create busy seasons for us. We are there for those who are affected by a disaster, each and every time. In the SERVPRO® family we have what we call Extreme Teams. These teams really fight the aftermath of major storms. Typically chasing tornadoes and hurricanes to help people get back to a certain level of normalcy. Hail Damage to a Roof

The last thing you want to think about during the summer are hailstorms, but that’s what happens around New Mexico. Now, I think we all have our game faces on, due to the amount of unexpected everything this year, so we just want to make sure you are prepared when the storms come.

Hailstorms are much like windstorms in the damage that they cause to roofs. The larger the hail, the more risk to your home. Not only does it damage the house, but it wreaks havoc to your plants and your vehicles. To protect your cars, there are coverings you can purchase. We’ve also see cardboard placed over windshields to at least protect the glass from breaking. Unfortunately, there is not a cover large enough or simple enough to throw over your home to protect it. However, we should remind you, do not go outside during a hail storm to protect your property; the last thing we all want is for you to get hurt. Watch the weather and prepare the best you can. Property can be replaced; however, you cannot be replaced.

Windstorm

Being surrounded by mountains mean that we can often experience some extreme windstorms that feel like they come out of nowhere. On Monday, it felt like we had of those storms in Albuquerque. Now it is not like we are in Texas or Oklahoma, places that experience tornadoes, but windstorms can still cause damage to our communities. We have all seen the tumbleweeds racing across the freeways during extreme windstorms. It makes you feel like you are in an old western.

Windstorms in New Mexico have more chances of causing damages to homes. Typical damages include, but are not limited to, roof damage, which could lead to future water leaks in the house, and numerous other issues. If water leaks go undetected for a while, it could lead to a mold issue. Strong winds could even uproot trees. Uprooted trees could fall onto the home, which could cause a lot more than roof damage; there could also be structural damage. It is always good to clean inspects on your roofs up to date to know what your risk level is during a windstorm.

Monsoon Season is Upon Us

Monsoon season is fast approaching, and we have learned anything from this year, is to expect the unexpected. Don’t you agree? Now some monsoon seasons have been kind to us, while for those of us who have lived here longer, we have seen what they can do when they come in with a vengeance. A motto to live by is one from Benjamin Franklin, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” So, let us get a plan in place just in case the rain decides to come inside this year.

• If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, by some sandbags and keep them around, if storms are predicted, then set them up outside the doors to try and prevent the water from coming inside.
• Place towels on the inside of the window seals.
• Have a few extra buckets, large pots, or bowls around in case there is a leak from the roof.

What happens if water gets in the house? There are several steps you can take to help prevent extensive damage to your personal items. However, there are also things you need to be aware of to keep you and your family safe.

• If the water is minimal, get towels to wipe up areas or use a mop.
• Remove any books, magazines, or other colored items from wet carpet to prevent staining.
• If there is standing water, do not enter the room where electrical shock hazards may exist.
• Contact your insurance company so they can help assess the damage and to see if they will cover any damage caused by the water.
• Contact your local restoration company to help dry out your home and restore it to the way it was before the damage

Most importantly, be aware of the affected areas, and if the water looks dirty or has mud or other debris, completely avoid entering that area.

If a storm is coming, you should always be prepared. Although violent storms can strike anytime, the spring and summer months typically mark an increase in the threat of sudden, severe storms that sometimes include wind, rain, lighting and even hail.

Authorities issue a storm 'watch' when the potential for severe weather exists. A storm 'warning' will be issued when danger from a severe storm is imminent. The following tips will help prepare you to better protect yourself and your property when a storm is on the horizon. 

• Put a communication plan in place and prepare an emergency supply kit, including a battery-powered NOAA weather radio.
• Postpone outdoor activities; secure outdoor objects that could become airborne.
• Don't use corded phones or any appliances that are "plugged in." Use cell or cordless phones instead.
• Seek shelter in a home, building or hard top automobile. The steel frame of a vehicle (not the rubber ties) can help protect you from a lightning strike if you avoid touching metal or other conductive surfaces. 
• Avoid windows and doors, don't rely on concrete walls, and stay off of porches.

In preparation for a power outage or any emergency, every household should have a disaster supply kit that contains key items such as non-perishable food, drinking water, a battery-operated radio or television, a land-line telephone or cell phone, and an emergency contact list of relatives or friends. Extended power outages during extremely hot or extremely cold weather are serious concerns for individuals with special needs or for those who rely on life support devices requiring electricity, such as respirators or ventilators.

By law, utility companies are required to maintain and update their lists, annually, of customers who rely on life support devices. People with these medical concerns need to register with their utility company or complete an application to get on their lists. • NEVER run a generator inside a home or garage.

If the power is out for a prolonged period, plan to go to another location (a relative or friend’s home, or a public facility) that has heat to keep warm.
• Provide plenty of fresh cool water for your pets.
• Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion.
• Try to keep cash on hand. Equipment such as automated teller machines (ATMs) will not work during a power outage or blackout.

People with Disabilities and Other Access & Functional Needs

• Call your power company before rolling blackouts occur, if you use a battery-operated wheelchair, life-support system (such as oxygen) or other power-dependent equipment. Many utility companies keep a list and map of the locations of power-dependent customers, in case of an emergency.
• Ask utility companies what alternatives are available in your area. Contact the customer service department of your local utility company(ies) to learn if this service is available in your community.
• Have an extra battery, if you use a motorized wheelchair or scooter. A car battery also can be used with a wheelchair, but will not last as long as the wheelchair’s deep-cycle battery. If available, have a lightweight manual wheelchair for backup.
• If you are visually impaired, have a talking or Braille clock, or large-print timepiece with extra batteries.
• Consider getting a small, portable battery-operated television if you are deaf or have a hearing loss. Emergency broadcasts may give information in open captioning or American Sign Language (ASL)."
