Fire safety written out over fire background Fire Safety

After any fire damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first.

-Is it safe in the house?

-Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.

-Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.

-Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

-Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into the upholstery and carpets.

-Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.

-Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.

-If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.

-Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.

-Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.

-Change HVAC filter.

-Tape double layers of cheesecloths over air registers.

-Don't attempt to wash any walls, painted surfaces, shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.

-Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without consulting an authorized repair service.

-Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.

-Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.

-Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Ozone!

11/25/2021 (Permalink)

Ozone set in place The higher the ozone, the more it deodorize.

We are back to our Fire Job that we previously talked about on last weeks blog.

This week we are discussing some of the equipment that is super important to our jobs.

Ozones!

Ozones are used to oxidize organic odors such as smoke, pet odors, mildew, organic pollutants and more without chemicals.

HOW IT WORKS:
A transformer shoots several thousand volts of
electricity through a reactor, causing the atom of a
water molecule to change from an O2 molecule to a
very unstable O3 molecule. The extra O molecule
then attaches itself to a contaminant, actually
alternating its structure. The remaining O2 molecule
becomes stable once again.

Once we dry the area fully we recommend removing any living things.

We then set the unit as high as possible since ozone is
heavier than air and will fall. We also set up an air
mover to help circulate the ozone.

Sealing the room to prevent dissipation to areas that do not need to
be deodorized.

Lastly, we plug in the machine, set the timer, and switch the power button on.

Once complete, we ventilate the area thoroughly.

We will update you more on the progress next week!

Is Your Fireplace Ready?

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

Fireplace

We have already had our first snow this year, and it was record-breaking. For some of us, it was the first fire of the season. The crackling of the logs, the smell of the wood-burning, and that perfect feel of winter warmth. I remember my first winter with a fireplace. I had no clue what I was doing, nor what I needed to do to ensure my family’s safety. We lived in an apartment so some of the steps needed to care for the fireplace were the responsibility of the complex, but with a home, it is your responsibility to ensure the fireplace is ready before the first use. A few years ago, a friend of mine had a massive fire start in the attic because of the fireplace, and with 2020 going the way it is now, this is the last thing we want to see happen to anyone.

Some things are basic when preparing to use your fireplace, such as checking your smoke detectors and alarms, which should be done regularly anyway, but here is your opportunity if you haven’t done so yet. Other items would be to check the area for damage, clean the blower, inspect the damper, sweep the chimney. Now, I am going to be honest here. I would probably hire someone to check my fireplace and get everything ready because I could only imagine falling off the roof if I had to get up there. Like I said, just being honest, I am pretty clumsy.

So once the fireplace has been inspected, everything has been cleaned and checked, break out those logs and get it going. Roast smores, read a book, watch a holiday movie, but most importantly, be safe.

Until next time,

When Fire Hits Home

Fire Damaged Living Room

Having your home engulfed in flames, watching your belongings ruined not just from the fire, but from the water the fire department uses, is heart-wrenching. A few years ago, I watched some close friends of mine go through this very thing. Their fireplace started a fire in the attic which spread through the ceiling of the house. Thankfully, everyone got out safely, but they had to stand there and watch their home burn while the fire department worked diligently to put the fire out. A week later I received a call from the family asking for advice. She felt that the company their insurance referred them to was not doing what they should have been doing. Although I was not with SERVPRO® yet, I had previously worked in the disaster restoration industry. When I arrived at the house, I could see that nothing had been done, and I will never forget the look on my dear friend’s face. The look of hopelessness, anger, sadness, and the overwhelming sense of feeling lost. I immediately got on the phone with the Marketing Gal at that time, Tonya Smith (who is now our fearless leader and Rockstar General Manager). She immediately called her crews and had them dispatched to the house to start the work that should have already been started. I felt relief knowing that my friend and her family were in good hands. Tonya and her team restored my friend’s home and stepped in when to help when it felt like there was none.

Until next time,

How Fire & Smoke Affect Artwork

8/18/2020 (Permalink)

Art Street Room

Recently there was a fire outside a bay door at Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless. The heat from the bay door caused the insulation to heat up and melt causing smoke to spread throughout the Art Street room covering the walls, surfaces, and all the art on display. Thankfully the clean-up should not be too bad; however, with all the artist supplies in open containers, most of that will be deemed unsalvageable. Leading the organization to have to replace by purchase or donation. The other area of concern is for the art itself. Throughout the room there is art hanging on the walls, sitting on shelves, and propped up against items. While most of the art looked completed, there were several in progress. So, what happens if smoke, soot, and ash are not removed? Did you know that it could cause long-lasting damage, regardless if it is framed or not? Over time the paint will crack, chip, and fade faster than it would without damage if the soot and ash are not removed. Professional restoration companies would know the steps to take to preserve art, or they would have contacts for those who specialize in preserving art. It is important to move fast for things like this to prevent that additional damage.

Apartment Fire Damange

Fire Damage from a Candle

Who loves to burn candles in your home? Did you know how quickly a fire could start with an unwatched candle? We were recently called out to an apartment complex in Hobbs, NM, for a fire and now water loss. The fire was started by candle set too close to the curtains. Thankfully, everyone got out of the complex in time, and no one was hurt. Unfortunately, there is fire damage to the window and smoke damage to the entire unit. This was a 3-bedroom townhouse, so there was plenty of space for the smoke to go. And, yes, even though we are based in the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho metro area, we will travel the state to take care of our customers. In the case of this fire, there was a second unit damaged from the water that leaked through the walls. These were newer apartment complexes that had sprinkler systems installed throughout the unit, so that prevented the fire from spreading further. There were two other units connected, so this could have been a lot worse, there could have been more damage. So the next time you go to light your favorite candle, make sure you keep an eye on it, place it away from other flammable items, and do not leave it unattended.

Fireworks and the Reality of their Risks

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damaged Shed from Fireworks

July brings fireworks as we celebrate the nation’s Independence Day. This year more than ever, the skies lit up with fireworks in every state. Most say it’s due to lockdowns and quarantines. Other’s say it’s due to the political unrest facing our country. Well, whatever the reason, people celebrated loud and clear. However, with fireworks comes the risk of fires. In 2018, there was an estimated of 19,500 fires from fireworks.

In Albuquerque, one of our customers fell victim to neighborhood fireworks. A rough firework landed in their backyard shed and started a fire. They were extremely lucky that it was not the house, but they are still troubled by the outcome. Our crews are now sorting through debris from the shed and taking inventory of everything that was in the shed. Some items are beyond repair and will have to be replaced, other items suffered smoke damage, and the shed will have to be replaced. The homeowners are the sweetest people and even though they have suffered a loss, they are being patient with the process. When everything is said it done, we will have a new shed for their yard and items that are ready for them to have back in the shed.

Now we know that this year it seems as if fireworks went on sale with the number of fireworks that are still being set off within the city. We understand that people want to celebrate, but please remember to celebrate with safety. Remember that it might not be your items as risk, but it could very well be. Be safe out there.

Wildfire Season

7/9/2020 (Permalink)

Wildfire Danger

Wildfires in New Mexico can be a severe threat. Not just to our lands, but our homes. On Wednesday, the Ojo de los Casos fire wildfire started just an hour East of Albuquerque, burning over 90 acres. As of Thursday evening, no homes or businesses were affected by the fire, but this is not always the case. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2018, more than 25,000 structures were destroyed, including 18,137 residences and 229 commercial structures. Did you know that when you have fire damage to your home, you also have smoke odor, water damage, which could then lead to mold issues? Restoration companies like SERVPRO® of South Albuquerque are equipped to help residents during these times.

With how dry New Mexico is this summer due to the uneventful monsoon season, wildfires are more of a threat this year than in the past. Just look at the weather report for the upcoming week, with numbers in the triple digits, it’s going to be hot, hot and dry. So during this summer season, let us all just take extra caution to help prevent the risk of loss, whether it is of buildings or our forests.

It's time to break out the Grill

Fire Safety

Summer is fast approaching, which means more and more people will start to grill outside even more so during our current pandemic. As we are all safe at home, setting up the grill and fixing some steaks sounds like a perfect way to spend an evening outside. Although some might not recognize the risks of fire to your home, there are. Follow these tips to keep your home and family safe while cooking outside.

  • Make sure the grill is away from any structure.
  • Place the grill on flat, stable ground or surface
  • If it is a new grill, make sure it was correctly assembled.
  • If it is an older grill, and it is the first time you are using it for the season, check for structural damage.
  • For propane grills, make sure there are no leaks and that the propane tank is attached correctly.
    • With that, when you are done with propane tanks, please dispose of them properly.
  • For Charcoal grills, do not overuse starter fluid.
  • Always clean the grill before or after each use to prevent build-up.

Other things to keep in mind while grilling:

  • What out for small children who might be running around the grill.
  • Be aware of the clothing you are wearing

Keep the Fire in Your Grill

Skills to keep the fire in the grill is needed during this time of the year

Skills to keep the fire in the Grill

The weather is warming up in Albuquerque and you can mentally smell the BBQ food you’re eager to cook outside. Unfortunately, a grill fire can surprise you as something that wasn’t on the menu if you are ill-prepared. Before looking up new recipes or seasonings to try, it’s worth learning the basics of grill safety.

Preparation Is the Key to Prevention

After ensuring the grill’s footing is stable and removing low-hanging tree branches and other flammable items near the grill, it’s time to start your grill the safe and proper way:

Gas grills: Check the connections on both ends of the gas tank to make sure they are tight. After securing the connectors, coat the hose with a 50/50 water and soap solution before turning the grill on while its lid is open. If you witness any bubbles on the soapy hose during this test, immediately turn off the grill and have it serviced because those leaks put you at risk for a grill fire.

Charcoal grills: A charcoal grill should be safely lit only with charcoal starter fluid or a charcoal chimney starter. Using other flammable liquids instead and a fire can get out of hand and cause flare-ups that can spread to your residence or cause BBQ smoke damage.

Meat Temperature Shouldn’t Be the Only Thing Monitored While Cooking

While cooking outside, exercise vigilance by following these tips to prevent a BBQ fire:

• Supervise the grill until it is off
• Turn the grill off if you suddenly smell gas
• Call emergency services if a gas smell doesn’t subside after turning the grill off
• Wear clothing that has no loose or hanging parts that could catch fire
• Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it

If Fire Spreads Despite Precaution

Following these tips, most accidents can be prevented. If a grill fire occurs and cannot be contained with an extinguisher, contact your local emergency number. If the fire damages your property, a professional fire restoration company is worth considering to restore your home’s condition and remove any residual smoke smell.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”®

Pet Fire Escape Plan For Albuquerque

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

Help the small family members get out in a fire.

Fire Plans Can Save Lives

Fires involving structures occur every day, including homes with pets inside. Do you know how to react when faced with a home fire? Did you know that pets tend to panic and hide when faced with a house fire? The following tips are to help you save your pets when faced with a house fire:

  1. Notify rescuers that you have a pet in your home. You can purchase a sticker to place by your front door that details how many pets you have and what they are. This way, even if you are not there the pets have a chance of getting out.
  2. Design a fire escape plan: It is important to know where your pets usually are.  What are their favorite places?  Where do they tend to hide when scared?  In an emergency like a fire, there will not be time to waste looking everywhere for your pets.  You must have a concrete search plan with at least 3 locations where your pets can be found.  This entails creating a layout of your home and marking your pets’ “go-to” locations. You should also survey your home to identify potential pet hiding spots and indicate them on your layout.
  3. Be prepared: Keep all equipment you would need while escaping a fire close together. For dogs that would be leashes; for cats or other small animals that might be carriers.  Make sure these items are always put in the same place and are easy to get to.  Don’t bury carriers in the attic or the back of a closet.  In a fire, there won’t be any time to hunt for them. Fires are life and death situations – rapid response is critical!
  4. Practice makes perfect: Once you have laid out your plan, you will need to practice it using different scenarios. For example, practice what to do if the fire is in the kitchen; then if the fire is in a bedroom, and so on.  You should go as far as to practice your escape with your pets from a second story using a ladder.  (If you don’t have an escape ladder you should get one, as well as the appropriate equipment needed to assist you carrying an animal down a ladder.)  Practice finding your pets. Start outside, rush into the house, find your pet, and take them outside. Repeating this drill can help animals become familiar with process. You may even be able to train dogs to go to a certain area outside when the smoke detector rings.  Continue practicing until you are comfortable with your fire escape plan and it works efficiently.

Fires are traumatic and life changing experiences.  Prevent further disaster by creating a Fire Escape Plan for your home. Practice it frequently and continue to test yourself.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”®

What Type of Smoke Alarm Is Best for My Home?

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

There are few more frightening experiences than a house fire. While this is the last event Albuquerque residents likely want to think about, it is nevertheless a vital consideration. Protecting your home and the lives of everyone in the household is top priority, so look to the following different types of equipment to choose the best smoke alarm for your home.

While some fire alarms pick up heat, the effectiveness of these models can pale in comparison to a smoke detector. There are three basic types of such detectors to choose between:

1. Ionization Alarms

An ionized detector is generally cheaper than other types of alarms. These alarms use miniscule amounts of radioactive material to ionize the air in a small chamber in the device, allowing the air to carry an electric charge. When smoke passes through this chamber, it causes a disruption in this electrical current, which then sets off the alarm.

2. Photoelectric Alarms

According to most smoke alarm experts, photoelectric alarms have a smaller chance of making false alarms than their ionization counterparts. This type of fire safety device uses a light beam and a photoelectric sensor to detect smoke. While ionized alarms are usually better for spotting fast fires, photoelectric alarms typically best detect smoldering fires.

3. Smart Alarms

Most smart alarms use photoelectric sensors, and some even have a split-spectrum sensor for greater accuracy. Although identical to non-smart detectors in terms of basic function, a smart detector has more customized options and can send alerts directly to phones and tablets.

If you're like most homeowners in Albuquerque you've probably wondered which device is best for your space. Whether you're well-versed in the world of smoke detectors or are just getting started, expanding your knowledge on product options is never a bad idea. Once you've chosen the proper spots in your home for a smoke alarm, you can install the right ones to protect your living space.

Fire Safety During the Holiday Season

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December.

Between the feasts at Thanksgiving to the celebration of the new year, the holiday months are a time to enjoy holiday traditions with friends and family. However, most household fire damage happens during these months. Why is this the case? People are doing more cooking, using the fireplace, burning more candles, using decorative lights, and buying real Christmas trees. Follow these simple fire safety tips this holiday season:

When cooking, always keep your eye on the stove. Most kitchen fires happen when food is left unattended. It’s easy to get distracted and walk away for a few minutes. Always set a timer on your phone to remind yourself of the food on the stove or bring a potholder with you as a reminder. It sounds silly, but it works! Remember to keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen at all times. When using a fireplace, always put out the fire when leaving the home or going to sleep. Also, use a fire screen to keep embers and logs from escaping.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December. In fact, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. To avoid any fire damage, keep about a foot of space between the candle and anything that can burn. This goes for real Christmas trees- the needles tend to dry out which is the perfect storm when mixed with fire. It takes 30 seconds for a dry tree to engulf in flames. Set the candles on sturdy bases and always blow them out when leaving or going to sleep. To minimize the risk of your tree drying out, buy a fresh tree with intact needles, get a fresh cut on the trunk, and water it every day.

Finally, don’t plug more than 3 strings into each other on your Christmas tree. Extension cords should be in good condition and UL-rated for indoor or outdoor use. Rather, opt for a power strip instead and be sure to unplug the lights before leaving the house or going to sleep. When hanging lights outside, avoid using nails or staples, which can damage the wiring. Rather, use UL-rated clips or hangers.

As always, SERVPRO of South Albuquerque is Here to Help when you are dealing with fire damage restoration and fire damage repair. Happy Holidays!

3 Items You Need to Throw Away After a House Fire

7/18/2018 (Permalink)

After a house fire, it can be hard to determine what items are salvageable. This is tricky because soot and smoke can be harmful if inhaled or consumed. It’s good to know which of your belongings you can thoroughly clean and which you should throw away. Here are three items that should be tossed if they are exposed to high heat during a house fire:

1. Singed Clothing that has been burned should be thrown away immediately;

It’s not worth the risk of health issues. Smoke and soot can be very dangerous because they are composed of various toxic chemicals. When inhaled or directly contacting the skin, soot can cause health issues later on. Throw away clothing that has been exposed to flames and dry-clean any clothing that isn’t burnt but contains soot.

2. Potentially Contaminated Food

It doesn’t matter if the food is nonperishable or not, if it was exposed to high heat, it needs to go straight into the trash. High temperatures can spoil, warp, or activate bacteria within the sealed food, causing it to become dangerous to eat. Toxic fumes from the flames can also contaminate food. Cans that are bulging or covered in soot should not be consumed.

3. Cosmetics Makeup can become unsafe to wear if it is exposed to soot or hot flames.

Because the minerals directly touch the face, using contaminated cosmetics can harm your skin and lead to future health issues. Check to make sure that your makeup isn’t warped or covered in soot. Being aware of items that are no longer salvageable can save you time as well as protect you from potential harm. Fire damage can affect your possessions, and so it’s important to stay safe even after the fire has occurred. As you work to restore your home, be sure to throw away anything that is no longer reliable to have around.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage and Fire Damage Go Hand in Hand

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

When you’re recovering from a fire on your commercial properties in Albuquerque, it's natural to wonder why you incurred both fire damage and water damage at the same time. While you might have a basic understanding of the role of water in fighting a destructive fire, it's helpful to comprehend what happens when a fire starts to burn. The mechanics of fire suppression rely on such an understanding, and this knowledge also gives you greater insight into the restoration and cleanup process.

Why Does a Fire Burn?

While most people learn principles that make fire work in high school science classes, this knowledge also forms the foundation for both basic and advanced firefighting techniques. Fires need four crucial components to start and keep burning:

• Fuel (sometimes called a “reducing agent”)
• Energy, in the form of heat
• An oxidizing agent (commonly oxygen)
• A chemical reaction

What accounts for a blaze’s destructive nature that leads to massive fire damage is its dependence on these four elements. So long as there are plentiful supplies of fuel, heat and oxygen, a fire's chemical reaction will continue, permitting it to burn, grow and spread.

How Is a Fire Extinguished?

Fire suppression focuses on robbing the flames of one or more of these elements. When delivered in huge quantities through a fire hose, water both significantly reduces a fire’s heat and takes away oxygen as it transmutes from liquid to vapor form at extremely high temperatures. Unfortunately, this enormous amount of water also floods buildings and wreaks havoc on its own.

Even with groundbreaking modern methods for quenching a blaze, the most expedient way to kill a fire is with a huge amount of water. That’s why flooding and excess water occurs with most fire damage on your commercial properties. This combination is why a restoration professional’s job includes extracting water, soot, odors and smoke from your property along with completing essential repairs.

Fire Damage Comes in Many Forms and From Many Causes

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

The kitchen and bathroom are the most common fires

The Many Forms and Types of Fire Damage

If your property in Albuquerque or Santa Fe suffers from fire damage, you should talk to someone on our team. We are experts at minimizing current damage and keeping damage from increasing in severity. Even after a fire has been extinguished, its effects can continue to grow. We can stop that with state-of-the-art equipment.

Damage can be found even after small fires. These can happen anywhere in the home. They remain small when someone is present and can extinguish the fire before it can spread. The kitchen and bathroom are the most common, with the laundry room and garage coming in second. Bedrooms, living and dining rooms, and hallways can also have fires take place, but these areas are the least common. Patios are also prone to having fires, especially if outdoors cooking is done, or children experiment with a range of items from fireworks to magnifying lenses

Fire damage can range from discolored concrete and natural rock outside to charred walls and scorched carpets inside. Drywall can suffer additional damage if water is heavily applied when there is a fire, although drywall should resist small, low-temperature fires. Paneling and wallpaper will burn, however, no matter what it is applied to as a covering. Our team members are creative in matching or updating, your pre-fire décor.

Kitchens can experience scorched countertops and cabinets, which need either repairing or replacing. If the cabinet doors are warped from the heat and then the cold from putting the fire out with either water or a fire extinguisher, they are typically replaced as needed. Then the remaining ones are cleaned and re-stained if needed. If floors have been soaked with water in the effort to extinguish the fire, we at SERVPRO are equipped, and experienced, in getting it dry quickly so that underlay and any support beams are not damaged

For fires in the garage and patio areas, we can quickly clean-up scorched concrete so that residues are not tracked into your home, as these can contain harmful substances that were once inert. Vinyl siding that has been damaged can also be repaired. Scorched and burned areas of grass can also be reseeded and started back on track. We can also create and provide an inventory list of damaged items, particularly, but not exclusively, for the garage area. We can list which items are damaged beyond repair, salvageable, or undetermined for insurance purposes.

We'll help you get your home's beauty back on center stage and put the fire behind you.

How to Avoid Stove Top Fire Damage in Albuquerque

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Food on a stove top should always be attended. Prevention is key. But if you have fire damage, call SERVPRO to remediate!

Attended Cooking and Keeping Safety Materials Nearby Can Help Prevent Fires From Originating in a Kitchen

Cooking tops and stoves have been used by civilizations with advanced metal or stone work for thousands of years, as it is a simple enough concept: a plate or surface is heated by open flame sufficient to cook and burn any food placed upon it. However, these essential appliances also carry a fair bit of risk and are one of the most common causes of fire damage in homes worldwide. Smoke alarms in kitchens are regularly placed directly above the stove to react quickly to any fires that start on it. Stoves can cause fire damage large and small, sometimes leading to total loss of the home, so avoiding dangerous practices around them is essential for your home's safety.

Always Mind Food

A common source of fire damage in Albuquerque is food left cooking unattended on stoves. Even if you are minding time and have a timer set up for its cooking, being out of the room while something is cooking is never a good idea and can lead to fires. Especially with oily or dry foods, food items left on stovetops can burst into flame very quickly, spreading to nearby wooden cabinets and walls. Safe cooking involves regular monitoring of food on the stove, and this is essential in kitchen fire prevention.

Watch Where You Put Things

Another common cause of fires is when a resident leaves a fabric cooking item, such as a potholder, laying on a hot stove. Any object left on a stove has a risk of starting a fire, and a hot stove top should never be used as a resting place for anything. Simply use the counter that is likely only a few feet away.

Keep Safety Materials Nearby

If worst comes to worst and a fire starts on a stove, make sure you have a smoke detector nearby and a fire extinguisher in the room. Damaging the stove with extinguisher materials should be the least of your concerns, so don't hold back. Above all, mitigating further damage from the fire is essential, and crucial to this is stopping any small fires in their tracks.

Securing Your Albuquerque Property After a Fire

7/18/2017 (Permalink)

Fire damage can be devastating. Call SERVPRO to remediate!

There are Many Reasons to Call a Professional Company After Suffering Fire Damage to your Home

When you experience a fire on your property, you may have to leave quickly, leaving your property open and vulnerable. It is important to make sure that your home or business is secured because it protects you, your neighbors and aids in your insurance claims. When you call SERVPRO, they inspect your property and when needed, make it secure.

There are several key areas that must be secured from a fire damage event in Albuquerque. These include the perimeter, doors, windows and other damaged areas, like the roof. Doors and windows should be boarded up; roofs may need to be covered with a tarp to keep out inclement weather, insects, and animals. Walls and floors are inspected for their stability. They too may need to be covered with a temporary shoring. The perimeter requires temporary fencing around your property.

There are a couple of reasons why securing your property after a fire is necessary. One reason is to keep others protected. Children and pets become curious and wander onto the unsecured property and become injured. If your property is left unsecured and someone gets hurt, you are held financially liable.

The second reason to protect your property after a disaster is to keep thieves from stealing what remaining valuables you have and possibly causing additional damage. Also, securing your property helps to prevent inclement weather from causing more damage and to keep animals or insects from chewing on electrical wires and other belongings.

SERVPRO uses a variety of materials and methods to prop up weakened walls and floors. This allows their professional technicians to work safely on damaged areas. In some cases, family members and employees can continue to live or work in the property during their restoration process. As a leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO offers a broad range of services, including fire damage restoration, temporary fencing, board-up services, and more.

As experts in disaster remediation, SERVPRO of South Albuquerque is armed with the training and expertise to handle your restoration and cleaning needs. We are locally owned and operated, plus we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Cleaning And Sanitizing Furniture After Fire Damage In Your Albuquerque and Santa Fe Home

6/9/2017 (Permalink)

No matter the size or severity of a fire, it is important to get repairs started quickly.

Cleaning And Sanitizing Furniture After Fire Damage

No matter the size or severity of a fire, it is important to get repairs started quickly. Soot is very acidic and, if left long enough, it starts to eat away at different materials in the home. Fabrics are particularly vulnerable, and furniture requires cleaning as soon as possible.

At SERVPRO, we use the finest tools and techniques to repair fire damage inside Albuquerque and Santa Fe properties. We are very cautious when handling furniture because movement can cause soot residues to penetrate deeper into porous fabrics.

Why Is Smoke A Big Problem?
Smoke poses a challenge for fire damage restorers because it is a very resilient substance. It is made up of tiny particles of less than ten microns in diameter. It means that the only way to completely remove it from fabrics is to formulate smoke neutralizing chemicals with these same dimensions and consistency. Contact with human skin intensifies the acidic film it deposits on surfaces. For this reason, the SERVPRO technicians use nitrile gloves to prevent further damage.

Is It Possible To Clean Furniture?
The primary challenge, when it comes to cleaning smoke damaged furniture, is the presence of soot. This substance can be extremely stubborn and causes stains if the right cleaning chemicals do not get applied. Dry cleaning sponges are suitable for clearing loose residues and any powdery films on surfaces.

Once the dry soot is gone, the furniture gets sanitized with powerful cleaning agents. They help to prevent further discoloration and deterioration. The final stage is to apply a HEPA vacuum for collecting leftover soft particles. It is likely that the chair pads and any removable pieces of fabric require separate cleaning.

Does This Fix The Smoky Odors Too?
SERVPRO uses a potent oxidizing chemical (like ozone) to get rid of the smoky odors which develop after a fire. If we do not perform a deodorization procedure, the smells can become permanently trapped in the fabric. Ozone is a gas which hooks itself to the odor emitting particles and actively transforms them into particles which are incapable of producing odor.

Having a company that can coordinate the whole process from start to finish to make your life easier, and gets you back in your home or business faster. “Like it never even happened.”

Albuquerque and Santa Fe Residential Fire Damage Restoration

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

It can be tough to tell which objects can be salvaged and which are damaged beyond repair

Residential Fire Damage Restoration in Albuquerque and Santa Fe

In the event of fire damage in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, problems can arise not only from the fire itself but also from smoke, soot, debris and destroyed objects, and also water damage from firefighting efforts. Ultimately, fire repair can be a long and difficult process, and potentially compromised structural integrity can even lead to injury. Because of this, fire damage restoration is typically best left to local professionals and carefully aligned with insurance policies.

Fire Damage

Fire damage to your Albuquerque and Santa Fe residence itself can be the most difficult hurdle in many cases. Burned objects, wood, furniture, flooring, or anything else can be especially difficult to remove without specialized tools. Additionally, it can be tough to tell which objects can be salvaged and which are damaged beyond repair thanks to commonly heavy amounts of soot and ash. Depending on the intensity of the fire, this may require a full team of people to clean up.

Smoke Damage

In addition to darkening and staining even the hardest to reach corners, smoke can also leave a pervasive smell long after the house is visually clean. This is due to tiny and microscopic particles of smoke, which often work their way into the walls and floors of the house itself. Cleaning up smoke in a Los Angeles home typically requires special equipment and a lengthy cleaning time.

Water Damage

Water damage often surprises homeowners as being an even larger problem than the fire damage itself. Whether through firefighters' hoses or burst pipes, heavy water damage is relatively common among fire-damaged Los Angeles homes. Depending on the scale and intensity of the water damage, this may require extensive reconstruction efforts.

Fire Prevention Tips

7/12/2016 (Permalink)

The following was taken directly from: https://www.ready.gov/home-fires

"Most home fires occur in the kitchen while cooking and are the leading cause of injuries from fire. Common causes of fires at night are carelessly discarded cigarettes, sparks from fireplaces without spark screens or glass doors, and heating appliances left too close to furniture or other combustibles. These fires can be particularly dangerous because they may smolder for a long period before being discovered by sleeping residents.

Home fires are preventable! The following are simple steps that each of us can take to prevent a tragedy.

Cooking

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Wear short, close-fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.
  • Do not cook if you are sleepy, have been drinking alcohol, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy.
  • Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid-free zone" of 3 feet around the stove.
  • Position barbecue grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

Smoking

  • If you smoke, smoke outside. Most home fires caused by smoking materials start inside the home. Put your cigarettes out in a can filled with sand.
  • Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out. The cigarette really needs to be completely stubbed out in an ashtray. Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can.
  • Check for cigarette butts. Chairs and sofas catch on fire fast and burn fast. Don't put ashtrays on them. If people have been smoking in the home, check for cigarettes under cushions.
  • Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used, even if it is turned off. Oxygen can be explosive and makes fire burn hotter and faster.
  • Be alert - don’t smoke in bed! If you are sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy, put your cigarette out first.

Electrical and Appliance Safety

  • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture.
  • Buy electrical products evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
  • Use electrical extension cords wisely; never overload extension cords or wall sockets.
  • Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker.

Portable Space Heaters

  • Keep combustible objects at least three feet away from portable heating devices.
  • Buy only heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Check to make the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism, and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.
  • Check with your local fire department on the legality of kerosene heater use in your community.
  • Only use crystal clear K-1 kerosene in kerosene heaters. Never overfill it. Use the heater in a well-ventilated room.

Fireplaces and Woodstoves

  • Inspect and clean woodstove pipes and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.
  • Never burn trash, paper, or green wood.
  • Use a fireplace screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of the fireplace to catch flying sparks.
  • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Store cooled ashes in a tightly sealed metal container outside the home.

Children

  • Take the mystery out of fire play by teaching children that fire is a tool, not a toy.
  • Store matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight, preferably in a locked cabinet.
  • Teach children not to pick up matches or lighters they may find. Instead, they should tell an adult immediately.
  • Never leave children unattended near operating stoves or burning candles, even for a short time.
  • Check under beds and in closets for burned matches, evidence your child may be playing with fire.

More Prevention Tips

  • Avoid using lighted candles.
  • Never use the range or oven to heat your home.
  • Replace mattresses made before the 2007 Federal Mattress Flammability Standard. Mattresses made since then are required by law to be safer.
  • Keep combustible and flammable liquids away from heat sources.
  • Portable generators should NEVER be used indoors and should only be refueled outdoors or in well ventilated areas."

Home Fires

7/12/2016 (Permalink)

The following was copied directly from https://www.ready.gov/home-fires

"Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States, with direct property loss due to home fires estimated at $7.3 billion annually.  Home fires can be prevented!

To protect yourself, it is important to understand the basic characteristics of fire. Fire spreads quickly; there is no time to gather valuables or make a phone call. In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.

Heat and smoke from fire can be more dangerous than the flames. Inhaling the super-hot air can sear your lungs. Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Instead of being awakened by a fire, you may fall into a deeper sleep. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a three-to-one ratio."

Putting Out Fires

7/12/2016 (Permalink)

Imagine a long day at work.  You’re tired, you’re grumpy, and you’re hungry.  You come home and preheat your oven so you can pop in something quick.  You run upstairs to get changed into your favorite old sweats.  Within minutes, your smoke alarm starts beeping loudly.  Your heart is in your throat as you grab your shoes and your phone and head back downstairs.  The kitchen is filled with smoke and the stove is on fire!  You call 911 as you head out the door and thank your lucky stars that they arrive quickly and put out the fire.  Now what?

CONTENTS RESTORATION

The first 48 hours after a fire damage can make the difference between restoring versus replacing your property and personal belongings.  Attempting to clean up the damage yourself can actually create further damage.  So after the first wave of heroes have rescued the property, let professionals help you restore it.  SERVPRO of South Albuquerque specializes in restoring contents damaged by water, fire, or mold. Our expertise and “restore” versus “replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. We pretest your belongings to determine what items we can restore to pre-fire condition. We use several methods of cleaning your contents, including:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.
  • WHAT YOU CAN DO UNTIL HELP ARRIVES

A fire damage will not only wreak havoc on your home, but also on your emotions.  Fear, uncertainty, stress, and doubt can overwhelm homeowners long after the flames have been extinguished and the smoke has cleared.  The staff of SERVPRO of South Albuquerque strives to restore not only your home, but your peace of mind as well, to make it like it never even happened.  Until we arrive at your home, there are a few steps you can take to minimize any further damage.

    • Limit movement in your home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring.
    • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery.
    • Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.
    • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
    • Do not wash any walls or painted surfaces.
    •  Do not shampoo carpet or upholstery.
    •  Do not clean any electrical equipment.
    •  Do not send clothing to a dry cleaner since improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

When a fire takes control of your life, SERVPRO of South Albuquerque will help take it back. (505) 345-4700.

    Fire Safety Do's and Dont's

    6/21/2016 (Permalink)

    Fire Safety.

Time is Critical Even After the Fire Is Out

    6/21/2016 (Permalink)

    House Fire.

The cost of smoke and fire damage restoration depends on a few variables even after the source is subdued.

Soot when left on surfaces can corrode and permanently discolor in the span of a few hours. If left for days, the issues can become irreparable and require the replacement of furniture, floor coverings, counter tops and much more.

Beyond soot; Burnt smells frequently linger, which make odor neutralization another important part of the process.

What many people don't consider until they’ve experienced a fire first hand is the effects of the water used to put the fire out. Parts of the structure and the contents that weren’t damaged by the fire itself may be adversely affected by the water and if not cleaned and dried quickly will need to be discarded and run the risk of mold growth.

in order for smoke damage restoration to be most effective, the job should be approached as soon as possible by a professional in mitigation. Trained technicians can remove and neutralize odors, and quickly identify which items may be able to be restored.

Smoke, ash, and water all contribute to the devastation, so having someone with the proper training is crucial.
